We need cynics!

(PAM) I heard someone once say that cynics are the best people to have on a project, and the worst are those who seem to agree and support, but are undermining the project behind closed doors. Far better to have a cynic who forces you to do due diligence, cover every angle and prepare you to know how to answer the inevitable cynicism that will arise.

On a project I'm setting up at work we've found a person to join who is a real cynical traditionalist. We get along really well, but he's brutally honest, and he won't be easily persuaded. So many people are positive towards us and our department, but we keep hearing that we have off the record critics too. I hope our resident cynic will make sure we face both the good and the bad so things don't get too ugly!

I wonder... can you out-cynic the cynic? Could you subvert the off-the-record critics by spreading even more outlandish criticisms and rumors about your department? Pretty risky strategy, but you could at least have some brainstorming fun around how to take cynicism to the edge.
