Trend Tube Map

(Scott) Inspired by subway maps, Nowandnext and Future Exploration Network have mapped out the major trends impacting society... check out this PDF - it is an incredibly cool visualization of the intersection of trends. Great inspiration.

Do you agree / disagree with what you see depicted? What trends are missing? What trends are you betting on in 2007?

Thanks to our friends at PSFK for the heads-up.

Scott, this is fantastic - you have just made my day. I've been struggling through mountains of trend documents, and in my head trying to map the different trends against each other and work out where they are going......thank you so much for this. I am looking to find major trends that will influence new, multi-platform tv ideas (ie. interactive, user generated, etc). It's hard because tv ideas are so much more complex than FMCG concepts and so are so many moments for the idea not to be well recieved or well executed - which as you know is no reason to reject an idea with potential.

What do you mean by "multi-platform tv idea"? Does that mean developing tv content that can also be re-purposed for sharing via portable media devices, the web, etc? What platforms are you most invested in?

I'd love to think about this a little if you'll humor me...

What's nice as well is that the trend map is released on a Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons license, so if you disagree with the trends we’ve chosen or think you can improve on the map!

Yes, exactly - or to look at it from a new angle - something that's not just taking place on the tv but on other media like internet and mobile. I want it to be where the interactivity via other platforms is intrinsic to the overall idea, not just an add-on after a tv idea is successful. X-Factor does it well with using texts to engage the audience in voting for their favourites, but there has to be something much bigger and better out there that engages the audience through interactivity.

Pam - a couple of very basic ideas to start off with (get out of my system). I'll work from the snowballing trend of "consumer control".

I know there was a movement with movies a couple of years back to let the audience choose the ending (like those "choose your own adventure" books you probably read as a child). There were breaks in the film and then text on the screen that invited the audience to vote via push buttons on their seats for the plot twist they wanted to see.

You could do the same thing with cliffhangers before commercial breaks that ask viewers to vote (online, mobile, etc) for what twist they want to see after the break. It'd be real-time programming.

Or, you could invite users to script and film their own episodes or endings. Capture them on film. Post them on YouTube (or MSN Soapbox once it's out of beta). Post them on the ITV site and invite everyone to vote for their favorites.

I think consumers want to feel like they have some degree of control over the destiny of a product, service, TV character, etc. How else could this come to fruition?

I'll think about some other trends and see what I can add. What trends do you find most compelling?

Hey everyone... from the Trend Map, from experience, or from your gut, what do you think are most compelling emerging trends?

Here is another very cool visual for inspiration - all the different kinds of charts & visuals melded together into a periodic table. Check it out: http://www.visual-literacy.org/periodic_table/periodic_table.html#
